Evening Echo, littering on Mytleville 2013

Can we combat litter on our beaches?

This country can look beautiful in sunshine.  Yet that this beauty can be so easily destroyed was graphically illustrated by photographs recently published of littering at Myrtleville beach.  This pretty little beach which has served Corkonians for hundreds of years is only one of many to have suffered from the Irish culture of careless with regard to littering.  In 2008, the results of Bord Failte’s Visitor Attitudes Survey showed that 18% of holidaymakers to Ireland regarded littering on beaches as being a real problem…

Bonfire Night Party in Pembroke Wood

There was a Bonfire Night Party in Pembroke Wood on Sunday night.  This was the second year in succession that the Residents Association organised a Bonfire Night Party and this year’s event was even bigger and better than last year’s.

Traditionally, four bonfires were lit throughout Passage West on the evening of the 23rd June.  But in more recent years, the bonfires had increasingly moved away from the traditional St. John’s Eve theme and towards an excuse for getting rid of unwanted rubbish.  So last year, in conjunction with the Cork County Joint Policing Committee, the town of Passage West offered itself as a pilot for implementing a bonfire-free zone.

Passage West Dog Show

Passage West Dog Show last Saturday was a huge success.  Dogs of all shapes and sizes turned out, from pugs, Jack Russells and shitzus to mastiffs and alsatians.  All dogs were exceptionally well behaved, the weather smiled on them throughout and the afternoon went smoothly from start to finish.

An adorable golden cocker spaniel, Oscar, won the Best Puppy class.  The Golden Oldie class indisputably belonged to a 15-year old Jack Russell.  The decision on the winner in the Waggiest Tail class was made by the crowd as children encouraged their dogs to wag their tails furiously.  With the weekend that was in it, a matching Gathering outfit for dog and owner won the Best Dressed class.  Other classes included Prettiest Princess, Most Handsome Dog, Best Rescue, Best Trick, Dog Most Like Its Owner, Child’s Best Friend and Dog Judge Would Most Like To Take Home…
